Prior to the 17th century, winemakers used glass to seal their bottles. The problem was, wine drinkers often had to break the bottle to dislodge the sealer. Needless to say that did not go over well, as wine lovers watched their precious liquid wasted with each new unsealing.

In the 17th century, advances in the manufacture of glass bottles made their openings a more standard size, which, in turn, allowed corks to become the sealer of choice for the industry.

Corks sealed the wine in the bottle more effectively, slowing the oxidation process. This was critical because it allowed the wine to age, mature slowly, and develop all the character that makes a good wine worth drinking.
